The Eurasian system for protection of industrial designs was introduced on June 1, 2021 and initially covered five member states, such as the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Armenia, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Kyrgyzstan and the Republic of Kazakhstan. On 31 December 2021 the Republic of Belarus also joined the Protocol on the Protection of Industrial Designs to the Eurasian Patent Convention of September 9, 1994 (hereinafter the Protocol).

Eurasian patents for industrial designs is a convenient legal instrument to cover several states by filing only one application and payment of one state fee to the Eurasian Patent Office. Certificate for industrial designs issued by the Eurasian Patent Office will have effect on the territory of those states in respect of which the Protocol has already entered into force as of the date of filing the respective Eurasian design applications. Eurasian patents for industrial designs will be valid for 5 years since their filing dates with the possibility of renewal thereof five times, thus making the total validity term of the design patent 25 years.
