Opposition against trademark CHAMPEZZO.
Mrs. Inese Polaka, Trademark Attorney of Agency TRIA ROBIT, on behalf of French organization Comite Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne filed on 22 April, 2014 the opposition against the trademark “CHAMPEZZO”, reg. nr. Ì 66 984, registered by the Lithuanian undertaking “ITALIANA LT”, UAB. The opposition was based on similarity of the challenged trademark CHAMPEZZO to the widely known geographical indication of origin Champagne.

The District Court puts an end to the dispute on BRŪŽA trademark
The Collegium of Civil Cases of the Regional Court of Riga by the judgment of 21 October 2016 has settled the dispute that arises in the beginning of year 2015 on registration and use of the trademarks BRŪŽA and BRŪŽA LEĢENDA between two biggest Latvian competing breweries, JSC Aldaris and JSC Cēsu Alus (about the decision of the court of first instance we have been reported earlier here).

Another victory in the Supreme Court
On 25th May, 2016 the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court has given the judgment in the case Nr. C04195412 (PAC-0060/2016) regarding the complaint brought by Dutch company GNT Group B.V. (GNT Beeher B.V. / GNT International B.V) against SIA “NutriFood Ingredients” on the termination of illegal use of trademark and transfer of rights for the domain name. The case reached the Supreme Court under appeal after it has been considered by the Collegium of Civil Cases of the Regional Court of Riga.

The new name for OHIM and Community trademark
With the entry into force of Regulation No 2015/2424 amending the Community trademark regulation on 23 March, OHIM became the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), and the Community trademark became the European Union trademark.

Moldova (MD) Patents
Following the agreement between the EPO and the Republic of Moldova, Moldova may be designated as a validation state in a European Patent Application filed after 1.11.2015. Currently the fee for designating Moldova is set to 200 euro. After patent grant, a translation of the granted patent into Moldovan language will need to be filed with the Patent Office Moldova.
